Lake George Septic Smart Campaign:

In 2022 the Lake Champlain Lake George Regional Planning Board recognized the need for increased septic system education and awareness for users in Warren County's portion of the Lake George Watershed. Through a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program and in partnership with Warren County Planning and the Lake George Park Commission two versions of mailers were produced and sent to resident and short term rental owners.

The mailers included tips on how to care for your system to help protect the high water quality of Lake George, those tips can be summed up as:

  • Think at the Sink!
Learn what not to put down your kitchen sink such as fats, oils, or greases.
  • Don't Strain Your Drain!
Learn about the importance of using water efficiently, staggering water use of water- based appliances.
  • Shield Your Field!
Learn about your septic system’s drainfield, including how it works, and tips to take care of it.
  • Don't Overload the Commode!
Learn about what can be flushed down the toilet, and what should be thrown in the trash.
  • Pump Your Tank!
Learn about a typical septic tank pump-out service, and how a septic tank works.

Our homeowner’s guides focus on best management practices for shorelines, septic systems, invasive species detection, prevention and management, and water conservation and can often serve as the first step to a broader water quality initiative. LCLGRPB can work with local lake associations and municipalities to tailor this guide to address issues that are unique to each lake as well as the broader issues related to lake health.
